The Institut für Weltkirche und Mission (IWM) is interested in a profound and unbiased interpretation of important aspects of the church's mission enterprise and its history.
The notion of 'mission' was and is often misunderstood by virtue of its close association with colonial history. Nevertheless, the Christian mission has found a new identity that was not solely neccessitated by external criticism. Rather an implementation of its very own Christian origins and the gospel provide all that is needed for a clear picture of adequate missionary work.
Notable examples for this development in the early modern age were important figures such as the Spanish Dominicans Bartolomé de Las Casas or Francisco de Vitoria from the school of Salamanca and others. De Las Casas' central stipulation was: there may only be one way of teaching the one true religion to the people, 'that is convincing the rationality by way of soft allure and spurring of the volition (intellectus rationibus persuasivus et voluntatis suaviter allectivus vel exhortativus).'
